Slot technology aims to help gamblers know when to stop

Players who use a casino reward card on a slot machine will receive a screen prompt that lets them budget for a day, week, or month. “Play My Way,” the state’s name for the new feature, was developed with nearly $200,000 in funding from the state’s annual evaluation of casino operators.

Plainidge Park, a slot-holer and harness racing track in Plainville, Massachusetts’s first casino, will test new features starting in late May, regulators said Thursday.

“This has never been done in America before and has never been done in any part of the world that has been successful,” said Stephen Crosby, president of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. “So we had to do this from top to bottom. It means everything from software design to marketing materials.”

If successful, the feature will need to be adopted by casinos being built in the state in the future, such as those being developed by Wynn and MGM.

Casino industry trade group The American Gaming Association has voiced concern about this, suggesting that the technology is ineffective at casinos in Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden and other countries that have been tried for years.

The association points to the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, which has suspended its program for the first time in nearly nine years, citing low usage and declining gambling revenue.

Mark Vander Linden, head of research and responsible gaming at the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, notes that Nova Scotia’s system was much more stringent than Massachusetts suggests.

The restrictions could not be adjusted because it was a mandatory program for all slot machine players, he says. In contrast, “Play My Way” is voluntary.

If gamblers choose to register, they will be automatically notified when they approach 50% and 75% of their limits. And they will never be cut off from betting. When a player reaches the limit, a prompt on the screen simply asks if they want to stop gambling or continue playing. They can also change the limit or unregister at any time.

Vander Linden added that his office will closely monitor Plainidge Park’s efforts to gauge its effectiveness. It is also watching a similar system test run at the OLG slot at Georgia Downs, a casino in Ontario, Canada.

“Play My Way” and other so-called “Play Management” systems are distinct from the “self-exclusion” policies in place at Plainridge Park and most U.S. casinos. These programs prohibit gamblers from betting on casino games.
