After an unexpected loss to Qatar, Hwang Sun-hong’s side recorded their first win of the tournament.
Hwang Sun-hong’s U-23 men’s national team earned a 1-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan in their second Group B match at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup 2024 at the Changwon Football Center on Monday.
After failing to capitalize on home advantage in a 0-2 loss to Qatar in the first leg, Hwang Sun-hong made seven changes to his starting lineup to show his determination to win.
In addition to overseas players Kim Sang-bin (Minnesota United) and Kwon Hyuk-kyu (Celtic), South Korea started Kim Shin-jin (Seoul), Hong Yun-sang (Pohang), Oh Jae-hyuk, Park Chang-woo (Jeonbuk), Baek Sang-hoon (Seoul), Cho Sung-kwon (Gimpo), Cho Wi-je (Busan), Lee Tae-seok, and goalkeeper Kim Jung-hoon (Jeonbuk).
After the change, South Korea chanted “charge forward” and quickly took the lead. In the third minute of the first half, after receiving a pass from Park Chang-woo, Jung Sang-bin sent a cross down the right flank, which Hong Yun-sang connected with his right foot to rattle the net for a 1-0 lead.
South Korea, which had made several mistakes and exposed its unstable appearance, started hunting for additional goals with Kim Shin-jin’s header in the 17th minute of the first half and Cho Wi-je’s shot during a corner kick eight minutes later.
At the end of the first half 1-0, Kyrgyzstan raised the line to score an equalizer in the second half, and pressed South Korea as it came out rough.
In response, Hwang Sun-hong attempted to change the atmosphere by putting Lee Hyun-joo (Bisbaden) and Min Kyung-hyun (Incheon), excluding Park Chang-woo and Jung Sang-bin. Since then, South Korea has sought additional goals to secure victory by pushing Heo Yul, Um Ji-sung (Gwangju), and Lee Jin-yong (Daegu) while preventing the opponent’s threatening offensive, but the game ended as it was.
South Korea, which won the day, ranked first in Group B with three points, while Kyrgyzstan fell to third place in Group B with one draw, one 바카라 loss and one point. Qatar, which beat South Korea in the first round, will automatically advance to the finals as the host country of next year’s tournament, without affecting its group stage ranking.
South Korea, which reported its first pleasant victory, will play its third game against Myanmar at the same place on the 12th. South Korea will pass the first qualifying round if it adds more than one point against Myanmar.
