Manchester United lost 0-2 to West Ham United in the 18th round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) held at London Stadium in London on the 23rd (Korea time). As a result of the match, Manchester United ranked eighth with nine wins, one draw and eight losses in 18 matches. West Ham regained sixth place with nine wins, three draws and six losses in 18 matches.
It also left a record of humiliation. According to the BBC, Manchester United had its worst start to the season since 1930. It was the most loss in a year before Christmas. It lost 13 of the last 26 games. Out of 18 games, he scored only 18 goals. Of those games, he had no goal in seven.
“What on earth happened to Manchester United?” the media said. “Manchester United scored less than 18 goals in 18 games during the 1973-1974 season (15 goals), 1972-1973 season (16 goals), and 1893-1894 season (15 goals). It is the first time since November 1992 that Manchester United has scored no goals in four consecutive games.”
According to Football Statistics magazine Foot Mob, Manchester United had 66 percent of the ball possession rate against West Ham. Even though they caught a lot of balls, they lacked efficiency. Three of the 11 shots were headed into the net. West Ham made five of the 12 shots with effective shots.
Manchester United lost the game after allowing back-to-back goals in the second half. Jared Bowen (27) scored in the 27th minute of the second half, and Mohamed Kuds (23) scored in succession six minutes later. Manchester United had several strikers including Rasmus Hoylun (20), Marcus Rashford (26), Facundo Felistri (22), Antony (23) and Alejandro Garnacho (19), but failed to score a goal.
In the meantime, he seems to be satisfied with his team’s performance. According to the Guardian of the U.K., Ten Hag told reporters after the match that although the team had a lot of players injured, Manchester United showed good enough to win the game. “We failed to score a goal, but the game dominated. Manchester United did not concede the ball to West Ham. We had three good opportunities, but we failed to catch one.”
He only emphasized mental strength. “There are many players who can score, including Rashford, Hoylun, and Garnacho. They can also score goals in set plays. There was no goal right away. Players have to unite with each other and trust themselves,” Ten Hag said.
Club legend clearly showed signs of frustration. “Manchester United has many problems. Especially, he has poor scoring ability,” Paul Scholes (49) said through TNT Sports. “Manchester United is having difficulty advancing. Strikers have to be confident and threaten opponents.
