The preliminary decision by the state racing board suggests hotel guests will soon be able to gamble on their beds at the Wheeling Island racetrack and game centre.

The committee conceptually approved the racetrack’s request to allow guests to watch the race and place bets in their rooms.

“The key for today’s guests is convenience,” said Alex Tucker, head of gaming at Wheeling Island. “We think there’s a demand for this.”

The racetrack recently completed its 151-room hotel as part of a $67 million expansion that includes two restaurants, two lounges, a food court, and a new gambling center.

“We are trying to promote racing. We are still at the race track,” he said.

Guests will be able to bet on other races from all over the country as well as Wheeling’s races, he said.

The Racing Commission has approved the concept of in-room games today, and I think we should approve the final plan before we begin.

Tucker said he didn’t think the plan would require legislative approval.

This decision could affect three other racetracks in the state, such as Tri-State Racetrack and the Gaming Center in Cross Lanes, if they build a hotel as part of the facility.

Mountaineers racetracks and gaming resorts already have hotels and allow bets in two or three rooms, according to Tamara Petit.
