LG defeats Hyundai Mobis in back-and-forth battle for 6th straight win

Behind a strong performance from Asem Marei, the Changwon LG Sakers extended their winning streak to six games.

LG won 88-80 on the road against the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus in the third round of the 2023-2024 Korean Basketball Association at Dongcheon Gymnasium in Ulsan on Nov. 11. LG has won six straight games. It is their fourth straight away win. They overtook first-place Wonju DB Promy with a 15-5 record. Hyundai Mobis is tied for fifth place with a 9-11 record.

LG Asem Marei recorded his second straight double-double with 22 points and 22 rebounds. Yang Hong-seok provided firepower with 19 points, Lee Jae-do 15 points, and Yang Jun-seok 11 points. Ulsan Mobis Gage Prim and Park Mubin each scored 19 points, while Ham Ji-hoon struggled with 18 points before taking a knee.

With the score tied at 8-8 midway through the first quarter, Yoo Yoo-sang made all three of his free throws to give LG the lead. This was followed by consecutive baskets from Yang Jun-seok, Marei, and Yang Hong-seok. In an instant, the score was up to 12 points. However, Hyundai Mobis rallied in the final minutes. Park Mubin scored seven points, followed by Prim and Ham Ji-hoon with four points each. The first quarter ended with Hyundai Mobis trailing 27-29.

The teams traded points until the middle of the second quarter. However, in the last minute, LG’s Lee Kwan-hee made a steal and Yang Hong-seok scored to extend the lead to five points. Justin Gutang then scored on a fast break after a steal to extend the lead. The teams traded baskets to keep the lead at seven points. LG ended the first half with a 46-39 lead.

The third quarter was another hard-fought battle. Hyundai Mobis’ Prim and Kim Kook-chan scored eight points apiece, while LG’s Marei led the way with nine points and eight rebounds. In the early going, Prim’s scoring was matched by Marei and Yang Jun-seok. Back-to-back baskets by Marei and Lee Jae-do in the middle of the period gave LG the lead, but Kim Kook-chan hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final minutes to close the gap. LG ended the third quarter with a 65-59 lead.

In the middle of the fourth quarter, Hyundai Mobis managed to turn the game around. Park Mubin and Lee Woo-seok hit three-pointers, followed by a basket by Prim to make it 74-73. However, LG, who had time to play, immediately regained the lead with a three-pointer from Yang Hong-seok. Ham Ji-hoon’s two-point play tied the game, but back-to-back baskets by Marei and Lee Jae-do gave LG the lead. In the final minutes, Lee Kwan-hee and Yang Hong-seok scored back-to-back baskets to drive a wedge in LG’s favor.
