It has been a year since the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to May, Nevada was the only source of legal sports gambling in the United States.
Last week’s Southern Gaming Summit at Vorage Resort & Casino in Biloxi had a major focus on tomorrow’s big date. Sarah Slane, senior vice president of public relations at the American Gaming Association, spoke at the event about the impact and success of American sports betting.
“Legalizing sports betting is the biggest win in the industry in a generation,” Slane said.
“Since the federal ban on sports betting was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, nearly $8 billion has been legally paid to sports. This has resulted in more than $55 million in state and local tax revenues.”
U.S. states have been constantly talking about approving the legalization of sports betting for them.
“States are lining up across the country as they introduce legislation to legalize sports betting,” Slane said.
In fact, last week we saw Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb sign a sports gambling bill.
“Since May, about $3 billion has been legally paid outside Nevada, showing strong interest nationwide,” Slane said.
That number will continue to increase as more states join.
