The estimated deployment of 120 machines was an important step in the WMS. Deutsche Bank game analyst Bill Lerner, however, thought the move could signal an easing of Harrer’s opposition to participating games, which let casino operators share gaming revenue with slot machine makers. Harrah removed hundreds of participating slot machines from Las Vegas casinos in his year, including the “Wheel of Fortune” game that runs with International Game Technology. Harrah’s executives wanted to change the percentage of revenue sharing with slot makers.
“Our view is that unique gaming technology and content will find their way to the casino floor regardless of the economic environment,” Runner said. Game revenues generated by local casino operators were hit in 2008, because the recession affected discretionary spending by casino customers. But one state is paying for the trend.
Pennsylvania’s seven gambling sites posted $131 million in gaming revenue in November, up 29% from last year. Rakinos and Slot Parr last month ran 16,793 slot machines, up 32% from a year ago. Despite the tough economy, Pennsylvania, which passed a game law allowing up to 65,000 slot machines in the state, continues to expand.
The Mohegan Sun in Pocono Downs started a $210 million expansion in July by adding 1,300 more games. The Meadows racetrack is adding a $160 million permanent casino with 3,000 slots in the early spring.
