‘Pig’s head’ back on the soccer field?…’Ungrateful!’ Outrage over goal celebration

Barcelona fans, outraged by Ousmane Dembele’s ungrateful departure to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), are planning a “special treatment” for the club’s worst traitor, as they did for Luis Figo.

“Barcelona fans are preparing special plans for the ‘ungrateful’ Dembele in the second leg against PSG,” the UK’s Tribuna reported on Wednesday (Nov. 11), adding that “fans will give him the same treatment as they did to Luis Figo, the infamous player who moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000.”

Barcelona came from behind to beat PSG 3-2 in the first leg of their 2023-24 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France, on Sunday.

There was a moment in the match that struck a nerve with Barcelona fans. Dembele, the club’s former striker, scored a goal and then celebrated in style.

In the third minute of the second half, after Barcelona had taken a 1-0 lead, Ronald Araujo’s clearance found Dembele, who fooled the defense with a folding move before slotting home a left-footed shot to equalize. The former Barcelona man scored against Barcelona and turned the tables on his hometown team.

Normally, when a player scores a goal against his hometown team, he refrains from celebrating, but Dembele threw his arms wide open and roared with joy. Barcelona fans’ stomachs must have been turning.

PSG turned the game on its head with Vitinha’s late goal. It looked like Barcelona were going to lose in Paris. However, substitute Pedro’s fantastic pass led to a multi-goal performance from Jafinha, and substitute Andreas Christensen headed home Ilkay Gündoğan’s corner to pull a goal back.

Barcelona took a valuable away win and moved one step closer to the last four.

However, the fans’ anger was not easily quelled. Despite Dembele’s goal celebration for his hometown team, Barcelona fans took to social media to vent their anger.

According to Spain’s Catalan Radio, fans were outraged by the “lack of respect for the home team,” “never seen Dembele so happy for Barcelona,” and “ungrateful,” among other things.

There is a reason for their anger. Dembele has been called a “cheat” at Barcelona because of his frequent injuries.

When Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for a whopping €125 million in 2017, it was expected that his two-footed dribbling, pace, decisiveness, and accurate crossing would translate well to La Liga.

However, after a poor pre-season, Dembele suffered a hamstring injury shortly after his arrival and became synonymous with glass. In his five seasons at 토토 Barcelona, Dembele played 185 games due to frequent injuries. That’s almost half of every season in the hospital.

Fans and teammates showed their support for Dembele by wearing his jersey and wishing him a speedy recovery. After the arrival of current Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez, Dembele seemed to come out of his shell. His individual performances improved and he was expected to be a key part of the attack, but last season, he suddenly requested a move to PSG and eventually pulled on a PSG shirt last summer from Barcelona.

The Barcelona fans, who had supported Dembele during his injury, were angered by his lack of respect for them.

Dembele’s behavior was reminiscent of Luis Figo, who 24 years ago left for rivals Real Madrid and is considered the worst player in the club’s history. Barcelona fans were furious at Figo’s transfer at the time, and during a 2002 visit to their home stadium, Camp Nou, they showed their anger by throwing foreign objects, including a pig’s head, at him as he approached the corner flag to take a corner kick.

According to Tribuna, fans are preparing a special treat for Dembele for the quarterfinal second leg at Barcelona’s home stadium, Olympic Luis Companis, on May 17.

There are growing calls for him to be given the same treatment as in dodgeball, and if it goes too far, the spectacle of a pig’s head flying from the stands into the stadium could be reenacted for the first time in 22 years.
