Pennsylvania Slot Bet Reaches Milestone

The amount traded at Pennsylvania’s slot casino topped $1 billion over the weekend, less than three months after the first slot facility opened. So far, gaming has generated more than $2.5 billion in revenue for the Commonwealth.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, betting companies topped $1 billion just 89 days after opening the state’s first slot casino in the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Nov. 14. Since then, two other facilities have opened: a Philadelphia Park casino and racetrack, and a Chester casino and racetrack in Hara.

Casino sponsors earned $1.06 billion and $968.8 million by the end of the week ending Feb. 11, according to figures obtained through revenue department data and posted on the PGCB’s website. Excluding tax-free promotional plays and state-approved adjustments, the slots generated $54.3 million in tax revenue. Pennsylvania has a 55% tax rate on terminal gross income, which is the difference between bet and bet. Game revenue so far is $267.6 million, including licensing fees, investigative deposits and other regulatory fees. That includes $50 million paid by casino operators, $50,000 by 14 manufacturers and $25,000 by 17 suppliers.

In addition to the 55% tax rate, casino operators must also reimburse the state for the oversight costs of the Gaming Control Board, the Pennsylvania State Police, the IRS and the attorney general. In this way, the regulatory costs of the four agencies are paid directly by the operator and not by any taxpayer.

“Revenues from this new industry already significantly exceed the costs of gaming-related startup costs so far,” says Ann Lacquer Neave, executive director of the Game Control Board. “The results have resulted in a tremendous positive return on investment for Pennsylvanians.”
