Kium 2nd rounder Son Hyun-ki “Special game? I want to play against Otani”

Kiwoom Heroes rookie left-hander Son Hyun-ki (18) impressed manager Hong Won-ki with his commanding pitching.

Son Hyun-ki pitched two innings in the second game of the 2024 KBO League exhibition series against the SSG Landers at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits over two innings to help his team win 5-4.

In the bottom of the fourth inning with Kiwoom leading 5-2, Son Hyun-ki, who was the second pitcher to pitch after starter Ha Young-min, gave up back-to-back singles to Go Myung-joon and Park Sung-sung, but he induced a ground ball to Jeon Eui-san, struck out Ahn Sang-hyun and got Cho Hyung-woo to fly out to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, Choi induced a ground ball to leadoff hitter Choi Ji-hoon, but his attempted throw while off-balance went high. He struck out the next batter, Guillermo Heredia, but faltered when he gave up a single to Choi Jung and a walk to Han Yu-seom.

But he induced a grounder to Ko Myung-joon and struck out Park Sung-han to end the threat. With the lead intact, Son Hyun-ki handed the mound over to Kim Yoon-ha to start the bottom of the sixth. Kiwoom won the game 5-4 to earn his first win of the tournament.

Son Hyun-ki is a second-round pick in the 2024 rookie draft. He was expected to immediately step up on the mound for Kiwoom, which was lowered after ace Ahn Woo-jin enlisted in the military and Jang Jae-young, who was expected to start, went down with a right elbow injury. He pitched two scoreless innings in the opening game of the exhibition series against the Doosan Bears on Sept. 9.

“I was more nervous than against Doosan,” Son said after the game. I think it was because there were more spectators and we played at a stadium (Landers Field) that I had seen on TV.”

Despite his words, Son pitched and played with guts. “I was preparing for it, but when it happened, I bowed down (didn’t make a normal play),” he said of his error in the fifth inning.

He then explained that he was trying to keep his slider close to his body when he gave up the run to Choi, which caused his pitch to wobble. The mistake didn’t shake him mentally.

“I was trying to pitch like a rookie,” Son said. Pitching coach Lee Seung-ho also gave me advice, ‘Pitch confidently even if you give up a hit,'” he laughed.

Kiwoom will play a special match against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are visiting Seoul for the opening game of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season on May 17. “I’m looking forward to facing 바카라사이트 Shohei Ohtani,” Son said.

Among the Korean players, he mentioned Heo In-seo, who was selected by the Hanwha Eagles in the second round of the 2022 draft. He was two years his junior when they played baseball together in elementary school (Suncheon Bukcho), and he was a tough opponent in high school.

He is currently playing for the Sangsung Baseball Organization. Son is looking forward to facing his “nemesis” one day.
