The reason why Iraq’s Aymen Hussein was sent off for accumulating cautions after scoring has been revealed.
Iraq were denied a place in the quarterfinals of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) 2023 Qatar Asian Cup after falling 2-3 to Jordan in the round of 16 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, 텍사스홀덤 Qatar on June 30. The defeat ended Iraq’s Asian Cup campaign.
It was Jordan who had the first laugh. Jordan opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when Al Naimat broke free and finished from the edge of the box. In the second half, Iraq came out firing. They stepped up their attack. Eventually, in the 28th minute of the second half, they evened the score.
Spurred on, Iraq took the lead. In the 31st minute, Hussein scored a powerful volley to split the Jordanian goal. After his goal, Hussein ran into the crowd of Iraqi fans and celebrated. But the celebrations didn’t stop there. Hussein then crossed to the other side of the field, sat down, and began eating grass. The referee gave him a warning. Hussein, who had already received one warning, was sent off for accumulating warnings.
Iraq had turned the tables and were now outnumbered. In the end, Iraq conceded two goals and went down 2-3. The defeat left Iraqi journalists furious, and they took their anger out on head coach Jesús Casas in the post-match press conference.
So why was Hussein warned that day? Various reasons have been cited for the warning, including a time delay and provocation of the opponent. The AFC has now released an official statement. “The AFC has received a number of questions surrounding the second yellow card issued to Hussain,” the organization explained on its website today.
“The first yellow card was a warning following a challenge for words and actions, and the second yellow card was for unduly delaying the resumption of play. The red card was then shown to Hussein. Hussein delayed play excessively after the goal. During the ceremony, the referee gave him three strong verbal warnings. In this regard, the referee made the right decision.”
