South Africa has no regulation when it comes to online gambling, even though legislation has been debated since 2008. The National Gambling Amendment Act, which regulates online gambling, was approved by the president 16 years ago. However, the bill remains unsigned.
The DUP said it would fill the “legal vacuum” in the gambling industry by introducing the new legislation. It said it took two years to craft the legislation, adding it had found a “perfect balance” between protection, regulation and administration.
“By not regulating this gambling behavior, it is encouraging the erosion of the rule of law and criminal activity, while the people are not effectively protected when operating land-use games,” the Democratic Solidarity noted.
“At the same time, lack of regulation is generating billions of rand in revenue and losing jobs to other gambling jurisdictions.
“The ANC government has shown over the last 16 years that it has no intention of protecting players and the industry from criminal elements. We have therefore decided to ensure adequate protection by introducing legislation from this private member.”
