Chinese referee Kim Min-jae carded for intentionally killing Korea

Is it intentional to kill Korean soccer? Chinese referees ruined the game.

Jürgen Klinsmann’s men’s national team defeated Bahrain 3-1 on Friday, thanks to a multi-goal performance from Lee Kang-in, in the first match of Group E at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. With the three points, South Korea moved to the top of the group.

South Korea won, but it was a close one. The game was marred by five yellow cards, three in the first half alone. As it turns out, the head referee Manning, assistant referees Zhou Fei and Zhang Cheng were all Chinese. Even if all referees try to be impartial, it was not necessary to assign Chinese referees to the Korean game.

There was a dangerous moment early in the match. In the 10th minute of the first half, Park Yong-woo was battling for the ball in the center of the field and raised his foot high on an opponent. After the ball went out of play, Park Yong-woo kicked his opponent in the knee and was shown a yellow card. The early carding of a starter in the first match of the Asian Cup is devastating. It is understandable up to this point.

However, the card given to Kim Min-jae in the 13th minute of the first half is hard to understand. Kim was cautioned for stopping a Bahraini counterattack. It was a normal defense. A card for Kim Min-jae, a pillar of the Korean defense, is more than a one-goal hit.

Fullback Lee Ki-jae was also shown a yellow card in the 29th minute for blocking an attack. The Chinese referee gave a yellow card to a Korean player every 10 minutes.

If we’re being fair to both teams, there’s nothing to complain about. However, in the case of the Bahraini player’s hard fall on Lee Kang-in, there was no foul called, let alone a card. The referee’s impartiality can be strongly questioned.

At the start of the second half, Abdullah Al Hashashi hit Son Heung-min hard. It was a direct foul, but again, referee Manning let it slide. It was a clear misjudgment. Even the gentlemanly Son Heung-min protested strongly, but the Chinese referee was not impartial.

In the 15th minute of the second half, he added a card to Cho Kyu-sung for colliding with an opponent. Cards kept being pointed out in situations that could have ended with a warning. The Korean fans on the field continued to boo the referee.

The referee’s abuse continued. In extra time, the referee showed a yellow card to Son Heung-min after he fell in the box. The referee gave Son a yellow card for doing a Hollywood move. Heung-min had a dumbfounded look on his face.

Lee Kang-in came to Korea’s rescue with a super-technical, multi-goal performance. Nevertheless, South Korea ended the first match with a whopping five yellow cards in their best 11. One more yellow card and they won’t be able to play the next game. Starting in the round of 16 tournament, a loss is an immediate elimination.

The yellow card stays in effect until the quarterfinals. South Korea is carrying a ticking time bomb with the Chinese referee.
